  4. FALCON 3.0c: WHY THIS STUPID "2.5" RELEASE IS NECESSARY
  5.  
  6.   The latest (released on CIS 27-Feb-92) patch to Falcon 3.0, called
  7.   FALCON 3.0c, makes several changes to the campaign file structure.
  8.   The problem, from my point of view, is that the bytes controlling
  9.   fuel and remaining planes SHIFTED position by two bytes!  Thus,
  10.   GASUP and Falconer release 2b "Replenish Planes" don't work anymore
  11.   in Falcon 3.0c.

  13.   Either I could have charged you a combined 65K or so to download
  14.   new GASUP and REPLEN programs, or I could do this: that is, pull
  15.   the _really_ new stuff out of Falconer Release 3, make a half-*ssed
  16.   "2.5" version, and upload that instead, thus at least giving you
  17.   the best parts of SMS and YFIF3 in the bargain.

  20. NOW HEAR THIS!  NOW HEAR THIS!

  22.   This program ONLY WORKS WITH FALCON 3.0c!!!  It will _run_ with
  23.   Falcon 3.0 and 3.0a... but it will DAMAGE your campaign files.
  24.   That isn't a possibility, it's a cold hard fact.

  26.   Supposedly FALCNR will check to see if you have FALCON 3.0c
  27.   running, and bomb with an error message if you have a previous
  28.   version.  But I can't guarantee that... don't take a chance!
  29.   Check your version!

  31.   If you KNOW you have FALCON 3.0C, but for some reason, FALCNR is
  32.   still bombing out with the "Not Running Falcon 3.0C" message, start
  33.   the program using the command "FALCNR IHAVEC."  This will also
  34.   work if, in the future, SpecHolo releases a new version which is
  35.   compatible with 3.0c campaigns, but makes other changes in the EXE
  36.   files.  The IHAVEC switch will make it work with such future
  37.   versions.

  40. YFIF3 IS DANGEROUS!
  41.  
  42.   There is one file, called PILOT.BIN, which holds 50 pilot faces
  43.   that you select from while in F3.  YFIF3, the Falconer .PCX file
  44.   merger, OVER-WRITES the faces in PILOT.BIN.  If you do not back
  45.   up your PILOT.BIN file, you will have to REINSTALL F3 if you
  46.   want the "stock" faces back.

  48.   Falconer release 2.5 searches for a file called PILOT.ABK when
  49.   you first run it.  If it does not find that file, PILOT.BIN will
  50.   be copied over to PILOT.ABK.  This pretty much ensures that before
  51.   you start twiddling around with YFIF3, a duplicate of your
  52.   PILOT.BIN file exists.  But you would still be smart to make a
  53.   backup yourself.

  55.   Falconer release 3 will streamline this, with the ability to
  56.   dump faces individually to files and retrieve/merge among multiple
  57.   PILOT.BIN type files.  However this function isn't tested yet and
  58.   therefore is not availabel in release 2.5.  So BE CAREFUL!  Sorry!

  61. LEGAL MUMBO JUMBO --- REQUIRED READING FOR FALCONER USERS!!!

  63.   This program is freeware.  It may be copied freely and distributed 
  64.   as long as it is not modified in any way, and this documentation 
  65.   file is packaged with the executable program.

  67.   No guarantees are made as to the compatibility of this program with 
  68.   Falcon 3.0c.  It has been tested thoroughly, however, remember that
  69.   the purpose of this program is to allow you to modify data that 
  70.   Falcon 3.0c does not want modified!  A combination of changes you
  71.   engineer via this program could conceivably destabilize a F3 
  72.   campaign and thence the program, though I believe it is highly 
  73.   unlikely.  It is also possible that future upgrades of F3 may be 
  74.   incompatible with this program.
